You can think of him as a poster child for our global inability to master healthier lifestyles . You can worry about the known risks of surgery for children and the unknown risks in how this operation might affect his development and his long-term health. But you also can reflect that, as best we can tell from the limited clinical trials that have been conducted among adults, this may well be his most likely current bet for a long and reasonably healthy life.
